Ukraine has inaugurated the third phase of the war, according to Vitélio Brustolin, professor of international relations at the Fluminense Federal University.
According to Ukrainian authorities, in a counter-offensive, troops advanced 3,000 km² and recaptured 50 cities that were under Russian control.
In an interview with CNN Radio however, the professor made a reservation: “The ‘turn’ does not mean the end of the war, it is not in that sense, in military terms, the conflict will still be prolonged.”.
He points out that “this is not the time to negotiate” a peace agreement, as “the Russians are in a disadvantageous position and the Ukrainians, as they are advancing, have no interest in negotiating.”
For Brustolin, the Russians must realign the front lines of combat.
“They claim that they repositioned troops in Donetsk strategically, but evidence shows that this is a narrative and that they left in a hurry, leaving arsenals behind.”
In this new stage of the war, the professor points out that Russia made strategic mistakes from the beginning.
“The idea on February 24 was to take the capital Kiev and depose President Zelensky, but the Russians failed.”
After that, in the second phase, the Russians headed for Dombass, “they managed to take it with great difficulty”, but Ukraine, armed with Western weapons, began the counteroffensive in the south.
