UN chief ‘strongly condemns’ attack on children’s hospital in Ukraine

UN Secretary-General António Guterres “strongly condemned” an alleged Russian attack on Ukraine that targeted the main children’s hospital in the capital Kiev on Monday (8), spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.

Russia struck Kiev’s main children’s hospital with a missile in broad daylight on Monday, Ukrainian officials said, and launched missiles at other Ukrainian cities, killing at least 36 civilians.

Guterres called the attacks on the children’s hospital and another medical facility “particularly shocking,” Dujarric said.

“Directing attacks against civilians and civilian objects is prohibited under international humanitarian law, and any such attacks are unacceptable and must end immediately,” he stressed.

The UN Security Council will meet on Tuesday (9) to discuss the attack, diplomats said. The meeting, scheduled for the morning, was requested by Britain, France, Ecuador, Slovenia and the United States.

“We will denounce Russia’s cowardly and depraved attack on the hospital,” British Ambassador to the UN Barbara Woodward said in a post on X.
