UN employee dies after vehicle attack in Rafah

At least one United Nations aid worker was killed and another injured after a vehicle marked as belonging to the agency was attacked in Rafah on Monday (13).

UN personnel were “targeted while traveling in a United Nations vehicle clearly marked with the UN flag and insignia,” according to Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for the UN Secretary-General. Haq did not blame either Israel or Hamas for the attack.

The death is the first of a UN foreign aid worker since October 7, Haq said.

Gaza's media office issued a statement blaming Israel for the murder of the UN workers. A CNN asked the Israeli military about the accusations and has not yet received a response.

The office of United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres released a statement condemning the attack on UN staff and called for a full investigation.

“The Secretary-General was deeply saddened to learn of the death of a United Nations Department of Safety and Security (DSS) employee and the injury of another DSS employee when their UN vehicle was struck as they were traveling to the European Hospital in Rafah this morning. With the conflict in Gaza continuing to have a heavy impact – not only on civilians but also on humanitarian workers – the Secretary-General reiterates his urgent call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and the release of all hostages ”, the statement reads.
