The UN agency responsible for humanitarian aid in Gaza said on Tuesday (14) that around 450,000 people left the city of Rafah in the last week – that is, at least a third of the population that had concentrated in the area when the attacks Israeli military intensified in other parts of the territory.
The number released is 90,000 more than that provided by UNRWA on Monday (13).
People are leaving Rafah in droves following Israeli calls to vacate ahead of a planned major ground operation.
“@UNRWA estimates that around 450,000 people have been forcibly displaced from Rafah since 6 May. People who face constant exhaustion, hunger and fear. No place is safe. An immediate #ceasefire is the only hope,” the agency posted on X.
The UN and humanitarian groups estimate that between 1.2 and 1.4 million people lived in the Rafah area before the start of an Israeli military offensive in the eastern part of the city last week.
Satellite images examined by CNN last week showed that the tent cities scattered across Rafah were emptier than before.
