The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights today warned the international community of the nuclear threat posed by “all of humanity” following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“The Russian Federation’s military offensive against Russia has opened a new and dangerous chapter in world history,” Michelle Bachelet told the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
“The increase in the level of alert of the nuclear powers indicates the seriousness of the dangers that, he added, are borne by the whole of humanity.
A few days after the invasion began, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered “a special level of combat alarm to be set up by Russian military deterrents,” sparking strong Western protests.
The 47 member states of the Human Rights Council are meeting extraordinarily on the issue of the war in Ukraine, at the request of Kiev, which has submitted a draft decision requesting an international inquiry.
The High Commissioner denounced the dire consequences of the Russian invasion on the population of Ukraine.
“The attack that started on February 24 is having a huge impact on the human rights of millions of people across Ukraine,” said Michelle Bachelet.
According to the latest UN report, 230 civilians have been killed in Ukraine, including 15 children, and 525 have been injured, but Michelle Bachelet warns that the actual numbers are much higher.
“Most of the civilian casualties were caused by heavy artillery, multiple rocket launchers and air strikes in residential areas, and there is” worrying information about the use of cluster munitions that hit non-military targets, “he said.
The urgent convening of the Human Rights Council was decided by a vote, at the request of Ukraine, and supported by a large coalition of countries denouncing the war waged by Vladimir Putin.
At the end of the meeting, Ukraine seeks the adoption of a resolution calling for the “rapid and verifiable withdrawal of Russian troops from all of Ukraine’s internationally recognized territory” and calls for the urgent establishment of a one-year “independent international , according to the standards of the commission of inquiry set up for Syria.
Some NGOs would like the text of the decision to also denounce the human rights situation in Russia and call for Russia to be excluded from the UN Human Rights Council.
