The United Nations (UN) lowered its forecast for global economic growth in 2022 from 4% to 3.1%.
“Global growth prospects have weakened significantly amid the war in Ukraine, rising energy, food and commodity prices, rising inflation and monetary policy tightening by major central banks,” the Organization said in a statement.
“This deterioration in growth prospects is widespread, including for the world’s largest economies, the United States, the European Union, China and many developing countries,” said Shantanu Mukherjee, director of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).
The US economy is expected to slow to a high of 2.6% in 2022, due to high inflationary pressures, aggressive monetary tightening by the Federal Reserve (Fed, the US central bank) and a strong dollar.
In China, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is expected to grow 4.5%, a drop of 0.7 percentage point in the projection, with strict policies against covid-19 negatively affecting the outlook.
