UN Secretary-General schedules meetings with Putin and Zelensky for this week

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will travel to Ukraine next week, where he is expected to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday, according to a UN spokesman.

Guterres will also meet with Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba as well as UN agency officials to discuss scaling up humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.

This Saturday (23), the UN said that Guterres “will be received by President Vladimir Putin” on Tuesday, after having a working meeting and lunch with the Russian Foreign Minister.

A UN spokesman said on Wednesday that Guterres was requesting separate hearings with Putin in Moscow and Zelensky in Ukraine to discuss the urgent need to bring about peace.

New stage of the war

The war in Ukraine may be entering a critical new stage, with a new focus by Russia’s military, a last stand in a key Ukrainian city and the promise of additional US firepower to help Ukraine react.

US President Joe Biden suggested that the conflict was reaching a new phase, as he this week announced another military assistance package of around $800 million to Ukraine – on top of the $800 million already announced last week.

Russia’s military is now focused on the disputed eastern portion of Ukraine, which was thought to be its objective before the invasion began. British intelligence suggests that Ukrainian forces have repelled numerous attempts by Russian forces to advance in the area – but US officials warn that the Russians may be preparing for a larger attack in southeastern Ukraine.

Russian advances in the south against besieged defenses in the besieged city of Mariupol, a key supply hub, are dampening hope for Ukraine’s military after the commander made a desperate plea for help. Ukraine’s government says women and children are also seeking refuge at a steel mill that is the stronghold of the military. The Russian president said on Thursday (21) that his armed forces would not invade the factory.
