UN: Sudan coup’s ‘deeply worrying’

The October 25 coup in Sudan “is deeply worrying,” the High Commissioner for Human Rights said today at the start of a special session of the Geneva Human Rights Council on the situation in the country.

“The coup betrays the courageous revolution of 2019 that was a source of inspiration,” said Michelle Bachelet.

“I urge the Sudanese military leaders and those who support them to step down in order to allow the country to return to the path of progress towards institutional and legal reform,” he said, denouncing a number of human rights violations which, he said, caused the death of 13 people and the injury of at least 300, but also the interruption of the Internet after the coup, which prevents the information of the population.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, which convened an emergency meeting, is considering a draft resolution submitted by Britain, Germany, the United States and Norway, which calls for the “immediate return” of the political government.

The draft resolution also condemns the “illegal detention” of Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok and other officials and calls on the military to “immediately release all those arrested illegally and arbitrarily”.

The latest version of the draft resolution abandons the idea of appointing a special rapporteur and favors the appointment of a high-level special rapporteur by Michelle Bachelet.

The vote on the draft resolution is expected in the late afternoon.

The situation on the field is evolving rapidly. The army chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, on Thursday ordered the release of four ministers arrested on the day of the coup, amid heightened international efforts to get the democratic transition back on track.

Sudan will not address the summit, the presidency said.

Osman Abu Fatima ‘Adam Mohammed, the deputy permanent representative of the country in Geneva, Ali Ibn Abi Talib Abdelrahman Mahmoud, asked in a letter issued in Geneva this week to speak on behalf of Sudan.

According to UN regulations, Ambassador Mahmoud remains the country’s official representative to the organization.
