A real health “tragedy” looms in the Gaza Strip due to lack of fuel and water, Unicef warned today.
“If there’s not enough fuel, we’re going to see the collapse of sanitation services,” Unicef spokesman James Elder told a news conference via video link from Cairo, calling the situation a true “tragedy” or “perfect storm” caused by the occurrence of diseases.
“We have a tragic lack of water. Roads in densely populated areas are paved with excrement. There is an unacceptable lack of toilets,” he added.
The Unicef representative also underlined that it is very difficult for the residents of the Gaza Strip to have personal hygiene or even just to wash their hands.
“If children’s access to water and sanitation in Gaza remains limited and inadequate, we will see a tragic increase (…) in the number of child deaths,” Elder said.
“Children are faced with a serious risk of a mass epidemic”he underlined.
Christian Lindmeier, a spokesman for the World Health Organization, pointed out that there are currently no cases of cholera in the Gaza Strip, where the bacterium that causes the disease was not identified before the outbreak of war.
On the contrary, he emphasized that the acute diarrhea from which thousands of already weakened people suffer is just as dangerous.
Three hospitals in the besieged from Israel, Gaza have asked for help to remove the patients and this process is underway, a representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) said today.
