The British government announced, this Monday (8), an investment equivalent to nearly R$ 19 million in what will be the largest open-air laboratory in the world. The UK meteorological service will work in partnership with the National Institute for Amazonian Research on an unprecedented climate experiment.
In the second phase of the so-called AmazonFACE, controlled volumes of carbon dioxide will be released into small forest areas to simulate how the environment might respond to future environmental changes.
The data collected is considered vital for improving carbon market budgets and developing detailed solutions for various emission scenarios for tropical forests.
Negotiations
At the start of the second and final week of COP26 talks in Glasgow, leaders and experts discuss how to honor pledges to pay for climate-related losses and data and help poorer nations adapt to the high temperatures that cause droughts, floods and increasingly frequent forest fires.
Former US President Barack Obama spoke at COP26, the 26th United Nations Conference on Climate Change in 2021, this Monday (8). According to him, curbing emissions and worrying about climate change: “it is not a partisan issue”.
“We need economies like Europe and the United States to be leaders in this discussion. We need that Russia, like Indonesia, South Africa, Brazil, nobody can be left out. I recognize that this is the moment when international cooperation is less, but something transcends political issues – climate change”, he said.
