United Kingdom: Retail sales decrease an intermensual 2.7% in May compared to -0.5% expected

Retail sales of the United Kingdom (UK) fell 2.7% intermensual in May after rising 1.3% in April (reviewed from 1.2%), according to the latest data published Friday by the National Statistics Office (ONS).

The markets were waiting for a 0.5% drop in the informed month.

Basic retail sales, excluding fuel sales for cars, fell 2.8% monthly, compared to the previous review of 1.4% and the estimate of -0.5%.

Annual retail sales in the United Kingdom fell 1.3% in May compared to 5% in April, while basic retail sales also decreased 1.3% in the same month compared to an earlier review of 5.2%.

Both readings exceeded market expectations.

Market reaction to the United Kingdom Retail Sales Report

The GBP/USD cut its profits in an immediate reaction to the negative data of the United Kingdom, although it still adds 0.18% in the day to 1,3483, at the time of writing.
