Uruguay presented on Thursday (1st) the term of adhesion to the Trans-Pacific Agreement, a free trade treaty that brings together countries from Asia, Oceania and America, ignoring the warning from Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay about a possible retaliation against the country in case negotiation of commercial terms outside Mercosur.
The formalization of the application for entry into the economic treaty, which brings together world powers such as Australia, Canada and Japan, was announced by President Luis Lacalle Pou, who said on Wednesday (30) that he would not retreat from the internationalization plan to meet pressure from continental neighbours.
On Wednesday, the chancelleries of Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay released a joint note warning Montevideo that they would seek all possible legal and commercial measures if the Uruguayan government submitted a request to join the agreement outside Mercosur, without the participation of the member countries. of the bloc in the negotiations.
In the view of its South American neighbors, Uruguay would be violating the Treaty of Asunción, the agreement that founded the Common Market of the South, and article 1 of the resolution that reaffirms the commitment of the member countries to “jointly negotiate agreements of commercial nature with third countries or blocks of countries outside the zone in which tariff preferences are granted”.
