Washington’s ambassador to Moscow said the US response to Russia’s security demands included counter-proposals for military exercises and missiles in Europe, Russian news agencies reported on Friday amid rising tensions over Ukraine.
The Interfax news agency quoted US envoy John Sullivan as saying that Russia would face harsh consequences in the event of further aggression against Ukraine.
John Sullivan said Friday that economic sanctions on Russia would be only part of the West’s response if the Russian military invades Ukraine.
Sullivan told the Internet that other measures would include export controls and greater defense of allies in Europe and would block the Nord Stream 2 pipeline from Russia to Germany.
He also said that the size of the Russian military build-up on the Ukrainian border would allow an invasion without warning.
