US elections: More than 77 million Americans have already voted early; see highlights

More than 77 million votes for the United States elections have already been cast in advance in 47 states and the District of Columbia, according to data collected by CNN Edison Research and Catalist – a company that provides data, analytics and other services to Democrats, academics and nonprofit advocacy groups, including insights into who is voting ahead of November.

Early voting participation was down from 2020 levels. That year, more than 110 million Americans voted early in person or by mail, equating to about 70% of all who voted in the election.

It is not possible to know the final total number of voters for weeks until all results are fully counted, but pre-election voting is expected to represent about 50% of all votes, which is a more similar split in the electorate to the 2022 midterm elections.

Republicans increased their pre-election vote share, accounting for more early votes than in 2020.

Donald Trump’s campaign has made greater efforts this year to encourage Republicans to vote early and by mail, a major shift from messaging against pre-election voting in 2020.

In the 27 states for which Catalist has comparable data, registered Democrats cast 37% of pre-election votes, while registered Republicans cast 35%.

The large gender gap remains but has narrowed slightly from 2020. Overall, about 1.8 million more women voted early than men in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin , according to data from Catalist.

However, that gap is smaller than it was at the same point four years ago. This is because fewer people voted early overall, but also because the percentage gap is slightly smaller.
