The Pentagon is tracking an alleged Chinese spy balloon flying over the United States, US officials said on Thursday, an intelligence-gathering method akin to a spy movie that reminds how far Beijing and Washington are willing to spy on each other amid rising tensions.
“Clearly, the intent of this balloon is for surveillance,” said a senior US defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The official stated that Washington had been tracking the balloon since it entered US airspace a few days ago, including observing it with manned US military aircraft.
Senior U.S. military leaders considered dropping the spy balloon over Montana, but ended up recommending against it because of the potential safety risk from the wreckage.
