US port in Gaza expected to resume operations soon, says official in charge

The temporary port built by the US military to transport aid to Gaza is expected to resume operations this Friday and aid distribution will resume the following day, provided everything goes according to plan, a US defense official said. .

The structure broke and suffered damage in the rough Mediterranean Sea last week, in a major setback for the US-led effort to create a maritime corridor for humanitarian supplies in the war-torn enclave.

The port is the result of months of work by American officials trying to find a way to get aid to Gaza without requiring dropping packages from planes or crossing border crossings. Although it was only operational for about a week, the port helped deliver about a thousand tons of aid to Gaza before it collapsed.
