The sanctions imposed by the West on Moscow if President Vladimir Putin decides to send an army to invade Ukraine will turn Russia into a “pariah”, a high-ranking White House official warned tonight.
“He would become the outcast of the international community,” Dalip Singh, deputy national security adviser on international economics, told reporters.
Russia would “isolate itself from international markets” and not have access to state-of-the-art technology, not even through China, he said, adding that the United States was “ready” if Moscow tried to use the energy resources has.
“We have taken measures (…) to coordinate our actions with the largest consumers and producers of energy, in order to ensure that we will have continuous supply and stability in the energy markets,” he stressed.
Washington has already said that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which connects Russia with Germany, will not be put into operation if Moscow attacks Ukraine.
Singh clarified that the first set of sanctions is unlikely to include measures that would exclude Russia from the Swift system for interbank transactions.
