A bipartisan committee of U.S. senators visiting Kiev has vowed that the United States will show solidarity and provide weapons to Ukraine, while warning Russian President Vladimir Putin not to launch a new military offensive against the country.
“I believe that Vladimir Putin made the biggest mistake of his career, underestimating how bravely the people of Ukraine will fight him if he invades Ukraine,” Senator Richard Blumenthal told reporters. “And we will impose financial sanctions, but the most important thing is that we give the people of Ukraine the weapons, the deadly weapons they need to defend their lives,” he added, after the delegation met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
These weapons could include Javelin anti-tank missiles, Stinger missiles, light equipment and boats, the US senator said.
“And so our message is: there will be consequences if (Putin) chooses to violate the sanctity of this democracy,” said his colleague Amy Klobuchar.
