The U.S. military says it is investigating an “incident caused by debris” in space and has forced astronauts currently on the International Space Station to take refuge on the emergency spacecraft to evacuate in case of emergency.
“The US space agency has been informed of an incident that caused space debris. We are actively working to identify the area of the debris,” said a spokesman, who also said the military was working with the State Department and NASA in this issue.
Some US space experts suspect that a Russian anti-satellite missile test is responsible for the wreckage, information that has not yet been confirmed.
Such an action, which would be a show of force on the part of Moscow, has already been committed by only four states in the past, including Russia. It is heavily criticized mainly because of the many debris it causes, which turn into dangerous projectile projectiles.
Earlier, Russia’s Roscosmos space agency said astronauts on the ISS were not in danger, without mentioning a possible rocket test.
“The orbit of the object that forced the crew to return to the ship today, according to the prescribed procedures, was removed from the orbit of the ISS,” Roscosmos tweeted.
“The station is safe.”
“Friends, everything is going well here. We are continuing our work, according to our program,” Russian cosmonaut Anton Skaplerov also wrote in a tweet.
In an interview with Agence France-Presse, Nasa did not respond to a request for comment.
Seven astronauts are currently on the International Space Station.
