US tests nuclear deterrent with ICBM launch

The US, through the space agency, was poised to launch the unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile on election night in a test of strategic deterrence amid heightened tensions with the Middle East and Russia. The test had been planned for years, and according to the US Air Force Global Nuclear Strike Command, is intended to “demonstrate the readiness of US nuclear forces and strengthen confidence in the effectiveness of the country’s deterrent capability”. The timing of the test, which coincided with the election, is considered fortuitous as, according to the relevant authorities, such launches are usually scheduled for early November, as was the case last year, when the test took place on November 1. “The election has nothing to do with scheduling,” the agency told the Lompoc Record newspaper in California.
