The US government has welcomed an inspection of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, held by Russian troops, by experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
“We fully support the mission of experts under IAEA Director General (Raphael) Grossi to the power plant and we are pleased that the team is on its way to verify the safety and guarantees of safe operation of the systems there and to assess the working conditions of the staff,” John said. Mr Kerby added that Russia must allow “safe and unimpeded access” to the plant and pointed out that no military operations could be conducted at any nuclear power facility.
“In the meantime, we continue to believe that the controlled shutdown of the Zaporizhia nuclear reactors would be the safest and least dangerous option in the short term,” according to the spokesman for the US presidency’s National Security Council.
The plant in Zaporizhia, where six of Ukraine’s fifteen nuclear reactors operate, was seized by Russian troops in early March, a few days after the invasion began on February 24. It is located a short distance from the front line in the southern part of the country.
Kyiv and Moscow blame each other for the shelling in the factory area, near the city of Enerhodar, on the Dnieper River, which raises the risk of a catastrophic accident.
