The United States will “definitely” impose export controls if Chinese companies send US-made semiconductors to Russia, a move that could “effectively shut down,” US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said today.
Raimondo has stepped up US threats to punish any company in any country that violates the tough export controls imposed on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, along with 32 other countries around the world.
The US Secretary of State said that all Chinese semiconductor companies rely on US software to build their semiconductors, which makes them subject to inspections. “If we find that they are selling chips in Russia, then we can effectively shut them down by refusing to use this software and we are fully prepared to do so,” she told Reuters.
