US will respond “positively” if Venezuela fulfills election agreement, says diplomat

The head of the United States mission in Venezuela, Francisco Palmieri, said this Monday (6) that he spoke with North American companies about possible relief from sanctions imposed on the South American country.

He assured that the US is open “to respond positively to significant measures towards the full implementation of the Barbados Agreement”, according to a message on the X account of the North American country's diplomatic representation in Venezuela.

The agreement is a pact that the Venezuelan government and the opposition signed in 2023, committing to free elections this year.

Palmieri said Washington's policy aims to encourage inclusive and competitive elections. However, the diplomat did not detail what type of actions the US expects.

Elections in Venezuela and Barbados Agreement

The presidential elections in Venezuela are scheduled for July 28.

The candidate of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) will be President Nicolás Maduro, who is seeking a third term. Ambassador Edmundo González Urrutia was chosen as the majority opposition candidate.

The Barbados Agreement was signed in October last year between the government and the opposition, under the mediation of Norway, and aims to define guarantees and political and electoral rights for the next elections.

The process had the support of countries such as Russia and the United States.

On April 17, the United States government decided to reinstate some of the sanctions on the Venezuelan oil and gas sector, as announced by the US Treasury Department.

Washington argued that the measure responded to the Venezuelan government's failure to comply with the Barbados Agreement.
