USA: Authorities are investigating the collapse of an Amazon warehouse that claimed the lives of six people

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has launched an investigation into the collapse of an Amazon warehouse in Edwardsville, Illinois by a tornado that claimed the lives of six company workers, a spokesman for the agency said Monday.

The tornado hit the warehouse of the e-commerce giant on Friday, leaving behind six Amazon workers dead and one injured. The walls on either side of the warehouse collapsed inward, and the roof collapsed, Edwardsville Fire Chief James Whiteford told a news conference Saturday.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has six months to complete its investigation, issue its findings and propose financial sanctions in the event of breaches of occupational safety and health regulations, said the agency’s spokesman, Scott Allen, in a statement to CNBC. A step of the service has been in Amazon warehouse since Saturday, he added.

Amazon officials did not immediately respond to a request from CNBC for comment.
