Rep. Liz Cheney, the loudest voice among Republicans opposed to former President Donald Trump, suffered a heavy defeat Tuesday in the Wyoming caucus to nominate Harriet Hageman for her House seat, who Mr. Trump claimed, US media reported.
Ms. Cheney, 56, is a black sheep for the billionaire after she joined the special House of Representatives investigative committee investigating Mr. Trump’s role in the January 6, 2021, attack on the federal Capitol.
With 18 percent of the ballots expected to be cast counted, Ms. Hageman led with 65.1 percent to Ms. Cheney’s 30.3 percent, according to Edison Research.
After former Vice President Dick Cheney’s daughter became co-chair of the House Special Investigations Committee, the 45th US president retaliated by ramping up his attacks on his “disloyal and warmongering” foe, throwing his weight behind Harriet’s rival Hageman, a 59-year-old attorney raised on a ranch, with whom she went to campaign in late May.
In the state where Mr. Trump won more than 70% of the vote in 2020, Harriet Hageman is remarkably supportive of the Trump environment’s theory that the 2020 election result was the result of a “stolen” that the Republican former president won, although there is no proof.

Republican Rep. Liz Cheney vowed on Tuesday to do “everything” to ensure the tycoon never returns to the White House.
The 56-year-old daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, co-chairman of the House of Representatives’ special investigative committee investigating Mr. Trump’s role in the January 6, 2021 attack on the federal Capitol, spoke out after her clean defeat by a protégé of the 45th president’s USA in Wyoming, a historically conservative state, where an intra-party process was held yesterday to nominate the GOP candidate in the November midterm elections.
Mrs Cheney appeared to widen her attack on the tempestuous tycoon, saying he was “fraudulently” spreading the “lie” that the raid on his Florida home by federal police last week was part of a conspiracy by striking political opponents to his political extermination, in the context of the “witch hunt”, as he puts it.
By promoting this “lie,” Rep. Cheney said in her acceptance speech, Mr. Trump “knows that (…) he will incite violence and threats of violence. That happened on January 6th and it is happening. again now.” He specifically denounced the fact that people close to the former president released the names of two FBI men involved in the Mar-a-Lago investigation. “This was deliberate and malicious,” Ms Cheney ruled. “No patriotic American should condone these threats or be intimidated. Our great country should not be ruled by a social media mob,” he added.
“Liz Cheney should be ashamed of herself, of the way she acted, of the spiteful and hypocritical words she uttered about others,” Donald Trump said in a post on the social networking site he created, Truth Social, after his opponent conceded defeat.
The pro-gun, anti-abortion baron heiress of the American right had already been ostracized by the state organization of the Republican party in Wyoming, whose head had personally participated in the demonstration on the day of the attack on the Capitol, before yesterday’s showdown.
There is already speculation that she harbors ambitions to run for the White House in 2024 as an independent candidate.
