USA: Inflation report released online fake

The U.S. Census Bureau has advised that a report circulating online purporting to show June inflation data, due to be published today, is fake.

“We are aware of a fake CPI report photo circulating on twitter. It’s fake. Stay tuned for the real CPI report.”

It is recalled that when the supposed consumer price index report came out yesterday, the Wall Street indices fell to intraday lows.

The image attempted to copy the formatting of the previous month’s CPI report, but with different dates and numbers. It contained several clues that it was a fake, including a chart with numbers that didn’t match those in the text.

The fake document showed that inflation in the US had soared to a frightening 10.2%, extremely higher than estimates.

Specifically, analysts expect the Consumer Price Index to strengthen for another month by the significant rate of 1.1%, reaching an annualized 8.8% from 8.6% in May.
