Nearly 330,000 children in the United States have been confirmed to have been infected with the new coronavirus in the past four weeks, according to the latest report from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the National Association of Pediatric Hospitals, released Monday.
Nearly 68,000 pediatric cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection were reported in the week ended June 23. This is a number dramatically higher than the corresponding period last year (8,400).
About 5.8 million children in the United States have been infected with the virus this year. Their total number since the outbreak of the pandemic has reached 13.6 million, according to the report.
It is urgent to gather more specific data by age group on how severe COVID-19 is caused by the variants and sub-variants of the virus and the potential long-term health consequences, it is emphasized.
“It is important to identify and address the long-term impact of the pandemic on the physical, mental and social well-being of this generation of children and young people,” AAP said in a report.
