The US Treasury today included Alina Kabaeva in the list of sanctions it has imposed against Russia. The 39-year-old was a great athlete in Rhythmic Gymnastics (two Olympic medals), got involved in politics and became a member of the ruling party “United Russia”. Information has come to light from time to time about her alleged affair with Vladimir Putin, which the Kremlin strongman denies.
As stated in the announcement of the US Treasury Department, Kabaeva is the head of the National Media Group (NMG), a media group that promotes the positions of the Kremlin.
Also included in this new round of sanctions is one of the world’s largest steelmakers, Publichnoe Aktsionernoe Obschestvo Magnitogorskiy Metallurgicheskiy Kombinat (MMK), the largest shareholder and chairman of the Board. Viktor Filipovich Rasnikov and two subsidiary companies (one of which is based in Turkey).
US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said she will use every tool at her disposal to ensure that Russian oligarchs who have bolstered the Kremlin in the Ukraine war are held accountable. Among the oligarchs targeted by US sanctions today is Andrei Guriev, who is said to be a close associate of Putin.
According to the US Department of Finance, attempts to avoid the sanctions were detected. It even names Joint Stock Company Promising Industrial and Infrastructure Technologies, a financial institution owned by Russia’s Federal State Property Management Service, as having attempted to circumvent sanctions imposed on the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF).
