US Pentagon spokesman John Kirby today praised Ukrainian fighters who remained fortified and endured weeks of Russian siege in defense of the city.
Hundreds of them left their last stronghold, the Azofstal steel plant, on buses of the occupying Russian army on Monday and Tuesday.
The fighters delayed the Russian advance on Ukrainian territory by occupying Russian forces, denying a “clear victory” to the Russian army.
“The soldiers who continued to resist there did so with so much courage and skill, and it is quite wonderful to think how much they endured. President Zelensky has called them heroes – I think we would all agree on that,” Kirby said.
