Domenico Arcuri he is no longer the extraordinary Commissioner for the Covid-19 emergency. In his place the Prime Minister Mario Draghi appointed the Army Corps General Francesco Paolo Figliuolo. He was born in Potenza on 11 July 1961 and has had positions in the Armed Forces of the Army, joint and international. He was Commander of the National Contingent in Afghanistan, as part of the ISAF operation, and Commander of the NATO Forces in Kosovo.
Since 7 November 2018 he has been the Logistics Commander of the Army.
This last assignment is the one that best qualifies him for the assignment entrusted to him.
Figliuolo graduated in Political Science from the University of Salerno, in Strategic Sciences with a second level Master’s degree from the University of Turin and in International and Diplomatic Sciences from the University of Trieste. He is a mountain artillery officer. In most of the images he has the hat with the pen of the alpine.
His first experiences in command are at the “AOSTA” Artillery Group of Saluzzo in the Cuneo area. He will be the Commander, in the Fossano headquarters, in the years 1999-2000. He will take the unit on a mission to Kosovo, in the Serbian enclave of Goradzevac. From September 2009 to October 2010 he was Deputy Commander of the “TAURINENSE” Brigade and then he was commanded until October 2011. In the following years he led several logistic offices. In the international field he was Commander of the National Contingent in Afghanistan and also Commander of the NATO Forces in Kosovo between September 2014 and August 2015.
The general lives in Torino with his wife Enza. He has two sons: Salvatore and Federico. Among his passions are reading and sport. He practices swimming and skiing of which he is a military instructor. He has had national and international awards. As soon as he was appointed, he said: «I will put all of myself and all the effort possible to face this pandemic. I will work for our homeland and our compatriots. The appointment was a bolt from the blue. For me a great certification ».
He has already collaborated in the return of the Italians who were in Wuhan last year and worked on the recovery of masks and gloves in the first months of the pandemic. With its management, the Igea operation was organized, with which the Ministry of Defense created 200 Drive Throughs.
It will now be up to him to manage the entire vaccination campaign with the aim of reaching 600 thousand doses per day. Replacing him Draghi expressed to Arcuri «i thanks from the Government for their commitment and the spirit of dedication with which he carried out the task entrusted to him in a moment of particular emergency for the country ». Arcuri responded immediately, who remains at the helm of Invitalia, an investment company that deals with corporate crises and development: “My experience as Commissioner for the Covid 19 Emergency ended today. It has been an extraordinary year and I am grateful to who gave me the opportunity to deal with the greatest emergency that recent history remembers. I am honored to have been able to serve my country in such a dramatic season ».
Draghi has also just appointed the new head of Civil Protection, Fabrizio Curcio, in place of Angelo Borrelli.
