Venezuela uses X blockade in Brazil to defend sentence that gives victory to Maduro

The government of Nicolás Maduro is using the blocking of the social network X in Brazil to defend the decision of the Supreme Court of Justice of Venezuela that ratified the announcement of the victory of the Chavista in the presidential election of July 28. The opposition alleges fraud.

“The Supreme Court of Brazil is nothing more than the Supreme Court of Venezuela,” Maduro’s Minister of the Interior, Justice and Peace, Diosdado Cabello, said on his TV program on Wednesday (4).

“We must respect the decision of the Supreme Court of Brazil, right? Of course! And of Venezuela too!” he exclaimed.

One of the most important figures in Chavismo, the newly appointed minister made the comment when reading, to his supporters, a publication that informed about the blocking of Elon Musk’s social network in Brazil.

“The Brazilian Supreme Court ordered the blocking of social network X throughout the country. And here I thought that only happened in dictatorships,” Cabello joked, taking advantage of the mention to ask for respect for the highest Venezuelan court, which ratified Maduro’s questionable victory in the last presidential elections, with more than 51% of the votes.

“We must respect the decisions there and the decision here. I cannot interfere in Brazil’s internal affairs or give my opinion on the Supreme Court’s decision,” he claimed.

Wanted by CNN the STF declined to comment.

Suspension of X in Venezuela

Cabello also alluded to the suspension of X in Venezuela itself. The social network has been offline for almost a month, since Maduro decreed its suspension for 10 days, accusing Musk of “inciting” hatred and violence in the country.

“We didn’t order any of this to be blocked. What we did was suspend it and ask them to come and talk to Venezuela. But the arrogance of imperialism says: ‘We’re not going to talk to these dictators,’” he commented.

In addition to X’s suspension, more than 60 news, fact-checking and organization websites are blocked in Venezuela, according to the country’s National Press Union.

Since the protests that erupted against the announcement of Maduro’s alleged victory in the presidential elections, more than 10 press professionals have been arrested, according to NGOs operating in the country.
