Venezuelan immigrants lined up to receive free meals in the city of Pacaraima, in northern Roraima, which borders Venezuela.
The meals were delivered to a local Catholic church on Tuesday night (10). The migrants are seeking help during a growing crisis following Venezuela’s presidential election last July.
Teacher Macie Baduani, who stood in line for food with her family, expressed her disappointment with the outcome of the election, which President Nicolás Maduro’s government claims is a victory. The opposition, on the other hand, disputes the result.
“This forced us to leave, it forced us to leave for them, for the future of our children,” Baduani said. She added that the election result was a huge disappointment not only for her, but for the entire world.
Another Venezuelan immigrant, Luis Moya, expressed his gratitude for arriving in Brazil with important achievements. “I’ve been here for two weeks. I’ve already processed my documents, thank God. I’m already paying rent and working, thank God.”
The Federal Police indicate that 12,325 Venezuelans arrived in Pacaraima in August. More than 8,000 immigrants arrived in the city in June, before the Venezuelan elections on July 28.
