United States authorities in Baltimore carried out a controlled explosion this Monday (13) to allow a portion of the Francis Scott Key Bridge to be removed. The bridge collapsed after a container ship hit it in March.
The detonations broke the structure into small sections, allowing crews to use cranes and barges — a type of vessel — to transport the debris, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said.

The action was scheduled to take place on Sunday (12), but was postponed due to weather conditions.

In the early hours of March 26, the ship “Dali” lost power and collided with the support of a bridge, which collapsed into the Patapsco River. A part of the structure was left hanging from the bow of the vessel.
As a result of the accident, six construction workers died.
The incident disrupted traffic at the Port of Baltimore, which ranks first in the United States for several cargo categories, including automobiles and light trucks, agricultural and construction machinery, imported sugar and imported gypsum, according to the state of Maryland.
Since then, four temporary channels have been opened, allowing some shipments to be received and sent. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has said it aims to fully restore access to the port by the end of May.
Maryland estimates it will cost $1.7 billion to $1.9 billion to rebuild the bridge and expects the work to be completed by fall 2028.
