Chinese drone maker DJI said on Wednesday that it completed the first successful drone delivery to Mount Everest in April, transporting three bottles of oxygen and 1.5 kg of other supplies from Everest Base Camp to the Camp 1.

The same FlyCart 30 drone was used to transport trash from Camp 1, located more than 6,000 meters high, back to Base Camp, at an altitude of 5,364 meters above sea level.
DJI said it conducted rigorous testing on its FlyCart 30 drone to ensure it could handle the extreme environmental challenges of the task, including testing wind resistance, low temperature and weight capacity.
DJI said its drones will ease the burden on Sherpas, who repeatedly risk their lives navigating Everest’s Khumbu Icefall to deliver supplies.
“The ability to safely transport equipment, supplies and waste by drone has the potential to revolutionize the logistics of Everest mountaineering, facilitate litter clean-up efforts and improve safety for everyone involved,” said Christina Zhang, Senior Director of DJI Corporate Strategy, in the company’s press release.
