Video: woman films the moment tour guide is struck by lightning in Rio

A tourist from Mato Grosso filmed the moment a tour guide was struck by lightning during a tour of Pedra da Gávea, in Rio de Janeiro. The case occurred last Sunday (19).

The video was recorded by businesswoman Karlla Araújo, 26 years old. As soon as the group reaches the top of the mountain, she films the landscape and shows the other people who accompanied her.

Then she changes the footage to the front camera and shows her own face. Shortly afterwards, a bang is heard and it is possible to see a flash – at which point Leilson Souza, 36 years old, is struck by lightning.

In an interview with CNN , Karlla said that, initially, she didn’t think it was lightning. “I couldn’t understand that it was lightning. In my head, he [guia] it was setting off fireworks.”

“That’s what I thought. But as my husband was very close to him, at a distance of 1 meter from him, he saw it. He saw the boy in agony, taking his last breaths there. And then he said ‘he died, the guy died’. And then I understood what was happening”, he reports.

Karlla says that, during the climb, it started to rain at around 9:40 am. “He [Leilson] He asked if we wanted to continue or if we wanted to return. We were in a group of five people, seven including him and his brother. We, by mutual agreement, decided to continue because it was raining calmly”, recalls the businesswoman.

The group reached the top of Pedra da Gávea at around 11:26 am. “It wasn’t raining there anymore, it was just fog. Time was already opening up”, he says. According to Karlla, the guide even said that the sun would shine.

The businesswoman stated that, moments before Leilson was hit, there were no signs of lightning. “We were surprised because at no point did anyone hear the sound of lightning or thunder.”

Another ray

Tour guide Marcos Rabello, a colleague of Leilson, stated that he had witnessed another lightning strike on the same day, but in a different location.

“I ‘was’ driving on another trail on Dois Irmãos hill. We also received a small electrical discharge there. The group felt it, their hair stood on end, and then the crowd felt and heard a pop in their ears.” Soon after, the participants descended from the hill. No one is hurt.

Leilson’s body was rescued by a helicopter from the Rio de Janeiro Fire Department.
