Today, December 22, VKontakte employees officially shared the results of the year and presented a very interesting and useful feature of animated vmoji avatars in video conferences. Thanks to this technology, users of the VK calls service will be able to use digital avatars during video calls instead of showing themselves in the frame. To use the function, the user just needs to connect to the call so that the camera reads the movements of his head, the animation of his mouth and eyes during the conversation, synchronizing this data with a digital avatar. In addition, the system even knows how to analyze the user’s speech so that the digital avatar repeats the actions of the person on the other side of the webcam as synchronously as possible.
The advantage of this feature is that the user can easily connect to video calls and more clearly convey their emotions and speech, while maintaining the privacy of personal space. For example, if a conference participant is not very comfortable showing himself on video (due to poor lighting, an unattractive background, or other reasons), he can simply turn on vmoji and still actively participate in the discussion of something. VKontakte experts even stated that this is their own development and that other video services do not yet have anything like it – the system not only creates an avatar, but also uses artificial intelligence to synchronize a virtual character and a real person.
At the moment, the function is available in the mobile and desktop applications “VK calls” and in the proprietary application “VKontakte”, while in the web version, for now, you can only look at the avatars of other users (you can show your own a little later).
