Volodymyr Zelensky asks for a “concrete decision” on Ukraine’s EU accession from the December summit

The president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky stated today from Kiev that he wants there to be some “result” in EU summit in December, where it will be decided whether or not his country is ready to start accession negotiations. At the next session, in December, “we expect a result, a political decision to start negotiations,” Zelensky said at the press conference he gave, together with his president European Council Charles Michel and the president of Moldova, Maya Sandu.

“I will do everything I can to convince my colleagues that we need a decision in December,” Michel replied, admitting, however, that the upcoming summit was heralded as “difficult”. The European Commission ruled in early November that Ukraine could start accession negotiations with the EU and the final decision will be taken by the 27 leaders of the member countries, at their summit, in mid-December.

Zelensky said he asked the “27” be “specific and clear” in this matter and to take into account the distance that Ukraine has already covered on the way to its accession to the EU. The Commission considers that 90% of the conditions it set have already been completed. The EU was asking Kiev for certain reforms that mainly concerned the state of justice and fight against corruption.

“We did everything we could and the rest will be done as well,” Zelensky said, stressing that the Parliament has already voted on the reforms requested by the EU and his country meets the conditions set for it, as reported by APE-MPE. The “27” should consider the request of a “warring country”, he reminded, considering that a positive response from Brussels would help the Ukrainians to believe that “there is justice”.

The European Union has a “moral duty” and it is its “strategic responsibility” to give a positive response to Ukraine, Michel replied. Some countries, however, express reservations about the inclusion of Ukraine, a rural country of 40 million people, and fear the “destabilization” that such a development could bring.

By accepting Ukraine and Moldova into its fold, the EU is making a “strategic investment for peace”, commented Michel. Ukrainian President Maya Sandu also urged the European Union to speed up the accession process. “Speed and unity are not only strategic choices, they are a matter of survival and a return to European stability,” he said at the same press conference.
