Von der Leyen visits flood-hit Italy: ‘My heart is broken – Europe is with you’

THE Ursula von der Leyen visited the regions of the north Italy that were affected by the murders floods which resulted in damages above of 5 billion eurosstressing that Europe will assists in helping.

The president of the European Commission met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and in a press conference he gave, he said that “seeing so many disasters and floods up close, it broke my heart, but it was useful to realize the magnitude of the problems and to understand how they should be dealt with”. “I am here to send an absolutely clear message: Europe is with you“, he added.

The president of the Commission also underlined that the EU’s main financial aid will be given through the Solidarity Fund and that a definitive assessment of the damages should first be made within the next quarter. “We will take a gradual approach and work effectively with the government in Rome,” he concluded.

For her part, the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that “the today’s presence of Ursula von der Leyen is a choice that is anything but formal“and that “special support should be given to the agricultural production of the region”.

“I want to say something more to the President of the Commission: two days ago, when I visited this whole area, I was particularly surprised by the reaction of the residents who, with great dignity, have already started to rebuild their houses. It is a reality that puts us in front of a great responsibility, so that we can stand at the level of these people”, concluded the Italian Prime Minister.
