Roskomnadzor imposed restrictions on the use of VPN services VyprVPN and Opera VPN in connection with their use to bypass the blocking of resources prohibited in Russia. The decision was made in accordance with the regulations for responding to such threats, according to the website of the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Communications. The restrictions will not affect Russian companies that use these VPN services in continuous technological processes. There are more than 200 such processes, and 130 companies.
Russia has a law banning the use of VPN services to bypass blocking sites from the register of prohibited resources, which came into force on November 1, 2017. In May last year, Roskomnadzor notified of a possible blocking of VPN services, the operation of which would not comply with Russian legislation.
As for Opera VPN, this service was very popular among Russian-speaking Internet users, especially after the blocking of Telegram in Russia. Three years ago, Opera VPN was at the top of the App Store and Google Play. However, on April 30, 2018, the service stopped working, and the company did not explain the reason for its decision.
