W. Zelensky: War inevitable without direct negotiations with Russia

Ukraine needs direct talks with Russia in order to end the clashes between the Ukrainian army and pro-Russian separatists in the Donbas region, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today.

Zelensky made the remarks in parliament after Kiev, through Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba, called on NATO to prepare economic sanctions against Russia and step up its military co-operation with Ukraine to prevent Moscow from launching an offensive. against her.

“We must tell the truth that we are not in a position to end the war without direct negotiations with Russia, and today this has already been recognized by all,” Zelensky said.

The Ukrainian government has said it has tried to hold face-to-face talks between Zelensky and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, but Moscow has ignored his demands.

The Kremlin has commented that Putin is not opposed to the idea of talks with Zelensky, but added that holding talks simply to have talks is useless and explained that Moscow would like to see a normal agenda for the meeting.

“I am not afraid of a direct confrontation with them, we are not afraid of a direct dialogue, we know which European countries support Ukraine,” Zelensky said.

Clashes have been raging in eastern Ukraine since 2014 between the Ukrainian army and pro-Russian separatist rebels, allegedly backed and funded by Moscow. More than 13,000 people have been killed in the conflict, which erupted after Russia annexed Crimea, a Ukrainian peninsula on the Black Sea.

Zelensky today called on all the country’s political forces to unite to return these areas to control of Kiev.

“Let us fight for this, for these areas, with the means at our disposal, all together,” he stressed. “We know that our army is the best in the world and will protect us,” Zelesnky said.
