To use a little slang, they set fire to the Latin American playground this Wednesday (27).
Presidents of some of the region's main countries engaged in verbal violence. There was the traditional right against left, between Argentina and Mexico. But also left against left, involving Venezuela and Colombia.
Brazil is also part of the show, criticizing Venezuela and being criticized by it.
The background to the disagreements is not just what each person thinks of the other's government. But, mainly, how each one sees their role in the international situation. And their possible alliances.
It is at this point that the situation becomes complicated from the Brazilian point of view. Geography and size of the economy suggest that Brazil should have great influence, especially in South America. This is not the case. Not only Caracas and Buenos Aires seem to pay little attention to Brazil.
There are not many people concerned in other Latin American chancelleries with what is thought in Brasília. It is difficult to imagine today that any regional organization — and Brazil has invested in several — could come together and reach consensus of practical application on any subject.
The Brazilian government is proud to practice what it calls an active and proud foreign policy. It would be even better if it had more influence.
