At least five people were killed and three others wounded on Tuesday during a clash between gangs in a mining region of southern Ecuador that drug traffickers want to control, police said. Yesterday morning there was an “attack” by gang members against their rivals, resulting in “the death of five people” and the “injury of (others) 3”, at a site where a mine operates, in the canton of Camilo Ponce Enriques, in Assuai, reported the police via X. Ecuadorian media reported that around 07:00 (local time; 15:00 Greek time) an exchange of gunfire broke out between gang members vying for control of this mining zone in the Andean province of Asuai. According to reports, two bodies were found decapitated and another charred. Camilo Ponce Enriquez, whose mayor was murdered in April, is among 20 communities where a seven-hour night curfew went into effect on Thursday, ordered by Ecuador’s president Daniel Noboa, in a bid to deescalate gang violence.
