War completes 11 months with sequence of mistakes by Russia, evaluates professor

The War in Ukraine completes 11 months this Tuesday (24th) with no prospect of ending, in the assessment of UFF International Relations professor Vitélio Brustolin.

In an interview with CNN Radio the expert stated that Russia made “many mistakes” over these months.

He explains that although President Vladimir Putin had calculated that he would face sanctions and condemnation from the rest of the world, he hoped to “quickly take over Ukraine.”

This was not the case, and “logistical problems, such as lack of provisions for troops; tactical, such as forming columns on roads; political and strategic.

At the same time, the Russians will have to deal with important economic issues, as they will have “more difficulty finding consumers for their commodities than Europe has had to replace them as suppliers.”

Another important issue is the supply of Russian gas to Europe.

Vitélio explains that Putin “has been threatening Europe with winter, with the cut off of gas supplies.”

However, the winter was less severe than expected, while Europe kept its reservoirs full.

“Russia, by using energy as an instrument of pressure in the war, ended up harming itself and Europe stopped buying Russian gas and found new suppliers”, he said.

The professor believes that “we are far from the end of the war”, with a scenario that is not positive even if the conflict takes a turn and ends.

“If it does not end in negotiations that both parties consider favorable, it is possible that it will lead to a bigger war later on”, he added.
