The EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Joseph Borel called on Israel today not to be consumed by anger in its response to last month’s Hamas attack, saying “one horror does not justify another”.
Borrell made these comments during a visit to Israelspeaking alongside Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen after their visit to Kibbutz Be’eri, one of the targets of the October 7 Hamas attack.
“I understand your anger but let me ask you to do not be consumed with rage. I believe this is something Israel’s best friends can tell you,” he said.
Speaking in a regional council building not far from the kibbutz, Borrell stressed that the EU solidarity with Israel and its support for the country’s right to self-defense are consistent with it international law. “But it’s one thing to defend Israel and another to take care of people in need,” he added.
“And that is why the European Union, along with supporting Israel’s right to self-defense, is also asking for humanitarian aid for food, water, fuel, protection (of people in Gauze),” said the European official, who also called for the “immediate and unconditional release” of the hostages.
