The dead increased to 22 from Russian missile attack at a railway station in the east Ukraine earlier on Wednesday (24/8), the Ukrainian president announced Volodymyr Zelensky in his video message. Initial reports indicated 15 dead and around 50 injured.
Mr. Zelensky provided more information about the attack in the Chapline region of Dnipropetrovsk province. He said that an 11-year-old child was among the victims, while he emphasized that five of the victims were burned alive in their car. For Ukrainians, this attack brought back memories of the Kramatorsk railway station attack, where more than 50 people were killed, including many children and the elderly.
“The situation in Chapline hurts us. Efforts to find and rescue people at the train station will continue,” the Ukrainian leader asserted and added: “Of course, the invaders will be held accountable for everything they have done, and we will definitely push them out of our country. Eternal is the memory of those who lost their lives at the hands of our enemy invaders.”
The Ukrainian authorities are clearly linking the attack to the celebrations of 31 years of Ukraine’s independence from the Soviet Union. “Our independence will not end. We will celebrate both the 32nd and 33rd anniversaries and all subsequent ones for as long as planet Earth exists. Ukraine will live forever and become stronger every day,” stressed Mr. Zelensky who called on his country’s citizens to remain united as the war with Russia enters its 7th month.
