War in Ukraine: Russians release Velikoburlutska mayor

Viktor Terestsenko, mayor of Velikoburlutska, a city in the northeast Kharkovremained free from Russian forcesaccording to the head of the province Oleh Siniehubov.

On Thursday (17/3), Siniehubov claimed that Terestsenko was “kidnapped” by Russian soldiers.

“The enemies have released Viktor Terestsenko. I just talked to him. He is in the hospital and is being monitored by doctors. He is a good man, with firm views that supports his community, the people of his area. “Once again this proves that the enemies will not dominate and no one will hand over even an inch of our land to the enemies,” Siniehubov said.

He added that Russian forces do not allow the transfer of humanitarian aid through the humanitarian corridors that operate and local officials are setting up their own aid centers in cities that are most in need.

A total of four mayors have been abducted since the start of the Russian invasion, according to Ukrainian authorities. The same sources also report that members of municipal councils have been arrested in some areas. In some areas where they have fallen under Russian control, pro-Russian authorities have already been deployed, and in some cases there are even reports of referendum preparations on whether the people want independence from Ukraine.
