War in Ukraine shows its teeth in Moldova: Security Council convened

Its Supreme Security Council Moldavian summoned President Maia Sadu as the war in Ukraine showed its teeth in neighboring states.

The Transnistrian Council has announced a “terrorist attack” on a military unit near Tiraspol. The Supreme Security Council will meet at noon and then the president will give a press conference.

Authorities in Transnistria, an autonomous region of Moldova, had previously said that explosions had taken place today at a radio tower near the border with Ukraine.

“In the early hours of Tuesday, two explosions were heard from the village of Mayak,” said a statement from the local Interior Ministry of the self-proclaimed “democracy”. They hit the village radio tower, located about 50 kilometers from Tiraspol, the “capital” of Transnistria. Both antennas were switched off.

Yesterday, the Transnistrian authorities announced that the headquarters of the Ministry of Public Security in Tiraspol was the target of a grenade attack, without any casualties.

Fears of a sideline

The “incidents” occur at a time when the Moldovan authorities are afraid of opening a side front of the Russian attack on Ukraine.

Concerns were heightened last week when a Russian general said Moscow was seeking to occupy southern Ukraine, which borders Transnistria, to secure direct access to the Moscow-backed separatist enclave financially and militarily.

General Rustam Minekaev, deputy commander of the Russian Central Command, also said that Moldova’s Russian-speaking population was “victims of oppression.” This pretext is systematically invoked by Moscow for its military interventions. He also referred to the “defense of the Russian minority” for its invasion of Ukraine.

Moldova summoned the Russian ambassador to protest the threats, calling on the Moscow “To respect its territorial integrity,” the APE-MPE reported, citing Reuters.

Transnistria seceded from the state of Moldova after a brief civil conflict following the break-up of the Soviet Union. The enclave, with a population of 500,000, is almost entirely dependent on Moscow, which supplies free gas and has deployed 1,500 troops there.
