French President Emmanuel Macron spoke again by phone today with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, about the “very worrying” situation surrounding the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, the Elysee Palace announced.
The two presidents discussed the developments and “the situation that remains very worrying” and “expressed their support for the work done by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)”, the French presidency underlined.
Macron also asked Zelensky what are the developments on the ground and asked to know what are the needs of Ukraine that France could meet. This week, the US announced a new $2.8 billion military aid package for Kyiv.
Macron and Zelensky had already discussed the situation in Zaporizhia last Monday. Yesterday Friday the IAEA reported that there is a blackout in Enerhodar, the town where the nuclear plant is located, and that this situation is “undermining its operation”. “It is absolutely unacceptable. This cannot continue,” said IAEA director-general Rafael Grossi, calling for “an immediate end to the bombing” in the area.
