We had to quickly evacuate the building where we live, says Brazilian player in Turkey

The Brazilian player Gustavo Campanharo declared, this Monday (6th), in an interview with CNN that his family had to quickly evacuate the building where they live in the city of Kayseri, which is approximately 200 kilometers from the epicenter of the earthquake in Turkey.

Campanharo was traveling at the time of the tremor. His wife, Bárbara Veber called and he followed everything from a distance. At the moment, with his family, he is sheltering in the headquarters of his club, Kayserispor.

“We are now here at the club where I play. We are safe here. We think this is a safer place to be if we have to evacuate again. Here in our city, I was traveling when it happened, my wife quickly called. I could be experiencing over the phone or together with them what was happening, this big scare”, declared Campanharo.

“From what she reported, and from everything that happened in the city, it was a very strong tremor felt. About 180 km from the epicenter. But we may be feeling a lot, even with cracks in our building. My family had to quickly evacuate the building where we live. It is a newer building in the city, more prepared for this, but even so, it had cracks and damaged structures. Everyone quite scared of what could happen,” she continued.

Bárbara explained that “it took us a while to understand that it was an earthquake. There was a blizzard warning that day. So I thought at first it was a strong wind. But it got stronger and stronger and the building moved a lot”.

At least 3,830 people died after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake shook Turkey and Syria early on Monday.

The total death toll in Turkey has risen to 2,379, Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay said. In Syria, 711 deaths were recorded in government-controlled areas, according to state news agency SANA.

The total number of wounded rose to 3,531 in Syria and 14,483 in Turkey.

According to Turkey’s Emergency and Disaster Management Agency, at least 5,606 buildings collapsed in Turkey during or after the earthquake.

According to the United States Geological Survey, at least 75 aftershocks measuring 4.0 or greater on the Richter Scale occurred after the first quake.
