UN Under-Secretary-General Jorge Moreira da Silva defends the need for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
A CNN Radio he stated that the conditions “to prevent the worst” are decreasing as time passes: “We are all worried.”
Jorge Moreira da Silva is also executive director of the United Nations Office of Project Services (UNOPS) and said he has a presence in Gaza.
“We support the population in energy and health projects and, at this moment, we are experiencing a humanitarian crisis on a significant scale,” he said.
He recalls that, since the beginning of the conflict between Israel and Hamas, more than 6 thousand people have been killed, including 2 thousand children.
“It is essential that civilian sites are not bombed and that all available help is brought in by opening humanitarian corridors,” he argued.
According to Jorge, “we have food, water and medicine to meet immediate needs, but we need a rate of more than 100 trucks per day.”
“And it’s not enough for the trucks to come in, it’s necessary to guarantee security for the agencies’ humanitarian workers to carry out the distribution,” he added.
